Josep Borrell, EU High Representative, visits Latvia during official trip

The outgoing High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, recently visited Latvia on one of his final working trips in his role. During his visit, Borrell met with Latvian officials to discuss regional security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Borrell praised Latvia for being a frontrunner in its support for Ukraine and an example to other countries in defense investments. He emphasized the importance of standing united against Russian aggression and called for more support for Ukraine. The EU, he said, has a strategic responsibility to enhance its defensive readiness and work together more closely.

The Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, expressed gratitude for Borrell’s support for Ukraine and his efforts towards peace and stability in Europe. She also highlighted Latvia’s efforts to implement sanctions and prevent their circumvention through effective control at the EU and NATO’s external border.

During his visit, Borrell toured the Camp Ādaži Military Base near Riga, meeting with NATO commanding officers and soldiers from the Spanish contingent. He also visited Estonia, where he commended the country for its defense capabilities and support for Ukraine.

Borrell’s trip to Latvia and Estonia underscores the importance of European unity in the face of security challenges. As his term comes to an end, his successor, Kaja Kallas, is expected to continue the work of promoting peace and stability in Europe and beyond.
