Wichita man pleads guilty to hate crimes in threatening Black minors and adults. Austin Schoemann waved a gun and used racial slurs to frighten two Black juveniles and prevent an adult from intervening at a convenience store. The hate-fueled crime spree also involved interference with federally protected activities, interstate threats, and interference with housing rights of a white woman by threatening any Black visitors. Schoemann admitted to sending threatening videos and messages. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized that racially motivated violence is unacceptable, and U.S. Attorney Kate Brubacher stated that the Justice Department will prosecute anyone harassing or threatening people based on race. Schoemann faces a possible sentence of 63 to 84 months in prison, with sentencing scheduled for October 16th.
