Legendary talk show host Phil Donahue, known for revolutionizing the talk show format, passes away at the age of 88; husband of actress Marlo Thomas.

Phil Donahue, an innovative TV host who became famous in the late 1960s for his pioneering talk show, passed away at the age of 88 after a long illness. He was surrounded by his family, including his wife Marlo Thomas, at the time of his death. Donahue’s show, “The Phil Donahue Show,” later renamed “Donahue,” was a groundbreaking hit that set the stage for similar shows hosted by Montel Williams and Jerry Springer. Oprah Winfrey credited Donahue with inventing smart talk on daytime television and introducing important issues into American homes.

Donahue’s career in television began by accident when he allowed the studio audience to participate in an interview, becoming an industry standard for talk shows. Throughout his career, he advocated for women’s rights and highlighted societal issues. He received accolades, including induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame and nine Daytime Emmy Awards. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions to television.

In lieu of flowers, Donahue’s family requested donations be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund. Donahue’s wife Marlo Thomas, also a prominent figure in show business, has been associated with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for many years. Donahue’s impact on television and society has left a lasting legacy, with his influence still felt in today’s media landscape.
