Former OpenAI engineer Suchir Balaji, who voiced legal concerns about the technology he assisted in creating, has passed away

Former OpenAI researcher, 26-year-old Suchir Balaji, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment in an apparent suicide. Balaji had accused OpenAI of violating U.S. Copyright law while developing Chat GPT, and his information was expected to play a key part in lawsuits against the company. OpenAI maintains that all of its work is legal under fair use laws.

Balaji had worked at OpenAI for nearly four years and was well-regarded by colleagues. His parents described him as a “happy, smart, and brave young man” who loved hiking and recently returned from a trip with friends. Balaji grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and first interned at OpenAI in 2018 while studying computer science at UC Berkeley.

OpenAI co-founder John Schulman praised Balaji for his contributions to projects like WebGPT and ChatGPT, noting his attention to detail and ability to find simple solutions to complex problems. A memorial is being planned for Balaji at the India Community Center in Milpitas, California.

For those experiencing mental health crises, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available for support. OpenAI has expressed devastation over Balaji’s death and extended condolences to his loved ones. Police have confirmed that there are no signs of foul play in Balaji’s death.
