Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab has unveiled his 2025 legislative agenda, which includes updating old laws and systems and introducing new election laws. One of the proposed laws aims to make it a crime to threaten election workers, following the 2024 election that Schwab described as running smoothly.
Schwab, a Republican who recently announced his bid for Kansas governor, also plans to shift control of ballot drop boxes to his office and reduce unnecessary customer filings while lowering fees for consumers. He aims to modernize the regulation and rulemaking processes for state agencies that have been paper-based since 1965.
The initiatives come ahead of the upcoming legislative session beginning on January 13, with Schwab emphasizing the importance of modernization and safeguarding elections. His proposals have received support from advocacy groups like the League of Women Voters of Kansas, who believe that additional regulations for drop boxes and protections for election workers are essential for maintaining safe and secure elections.
