The destructive wildfires in Southern California have so far claimed the lives of ten people, with thousands of structures destroyed and around 180,000 individuals forced to evacuate. Among the victims are individuals who bravely stayed behind to protect their homes, such as Victor Shaw, who perished while trying to save the family home that had been in their possession for over fifty years. Rodney Kent Nickerson, an 83-year-old who worked for Lockheed Martin for 45 years, also lost his life in the fires after refusing to leave his residence in Altadena. Erliene Louise Kelley, an 83-year-old grandmother known for her sweet and stern nature, passed away after assuming everything would be fine while staying in the home she had tended to for over forty years. Anthony Mitchell and his brother, Justin, were victims of the fires as well, with Justin having cerebral palsy and being unable to evacuate. Anthony remembered his father as a protector who loved his family deeply and refused to leave his son behind. These tragic deaths highlight the bravery and selflessness exhibited by individuals in the face of a natural disaster, as well as the devastating impact wildfires can have on families and communities.
