Two Jayhawk runners earn third place in opening 5K events at Kansas Relays


The 100th Kansas Relays took place on Friday, April 14, 2023 at Rock Chalk Park, where Kansas track and field athletes competed. Freshman Kaitlyn Swartz finished third in the women’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 17 minutes, 59.84 seconds. Another freshman, Blake Wohler, also finished third in the men’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 14:59.13. Several other KU athletes participated in various events, with notable finishes including Grace Cramblett and Lauren Heck placing in the top 10 in the women’s 800-meter run, and Payton Kasper finishing fourth in the men’s unseeded pole vault.

In other events, Weston Van Camp achieved a personal best in the hammer throw, though he finished in eighth place. The day’s action concluded with high school relays, with KU athletes set to compete in the 100- and 110-meter hurdles preliminaries the following day. Overall, it was a successful start for the Kansas track and field team at the Kansas Relays, with promising performances from both freshmen and seasoned athletes alike. The event showcased the talent of KU’s track and field program and set the stage for an exciting weekend of competition.
